The Basilica of Santo Stefano

I took another stroll this afternoon to discover this magical place. I’m glad I did because it’s shut tomorrow. It’s a very early Romanesque complex of about seven churches and chapels centred around a cloister. Two hall churches and one modelled on the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. It was a wonderful space with some excellent early sculptures and , my favourite, Saints reliquaries. No arms though. There were however the remains of two early martyrs.

The Holy Sepulchre

This is the central part of the complex and the oldest. It’s a beautiful space with a dodecagonal dome and a circular plan.
