Wow! Amazing! Incredible! This shows what real investment and commitment from the powerful can achieve. While UK public libraries are in terminal decline and seem to have no impetus apart from closures, indifference and saving money this has been achieved. The design is fantastic both externally and the interior. It’s impeccable. A cafe to rival the best, a cinema, performance space, quiet studio rooms and research areas and a wonderful library. Space to create, 3D printers, laser cutters, electronic workstations and a games studio with virtual reality! It has everything and is self service too!

As a librarian it is both heartening to see this intellectual and social investment and heartbreaking to compare it to the Uk. Why don’t we care! This beautiful space has a soul and the soul is brought by the people who visit and the environment they are given. It’s busy! The UK was the first country to enshrine free public libraries in law… in 1850. Look at us now!
