Todai-ji
This is a vast temple complex in the hills a short distance from the city. The complex passes through various gates until you reach the great hall containing a giant statue of Buddha… its quite magnificent and magical despite the number of people many of whom came to worship.

It’s quite a stunning place and a few photographs can’t do it justice. From the temple I walked around a neighbouring ancient shrine , Nigatsu-do which had far-reaching views of the city. The whole complex dates from the 8th century when Nara was the capital of Japan.

I also hiked to visit another world renowned Shinto shrine; Karsugataisha. Very beautiful and serene as you walk through the traditional “torii” or gate.

Lastly the deer! They’re everywhere and quite assertive when being fed the biscuits you can buy for them. They’re not above biting and following you around nibbling your behind. But pretty and sacred to the place. They bow down to you and you should bow back to show respect.
