At the Tokugawa museum and vintage shopping

Tokugawa Museum

This museum seemed like a great place so I walked to visit. I had called in at the Nagoya art museum first. It was good and had a good exhibition in the folk art tradition celebrating the beauty of everyday objects; Mingei. Very much like our Arts and Crafts movement in the UK and obviously both influenced by each other; Japanese art was seminal to the one and then in turn influenced the Mingei movement back in Japan. Very fascinating.

Tokugawa Museum

This place stunned me. It was a privilege to visit. It concentrated on the art of the Edo period and contained some phenomenal pieces of lacquer work, ceramics and textiles. All beautifully curated to give an insight into the art, culture and lives of the shogunate. Noh costumes, the tea ceremony, literature and pastimes among them. I was absolutely impressed. Maybe my best experience of a museum here. the museum building is beautiful in itself and designated a national treasure.

Sword guard
Noh mask
Noh costume … the extravagance
Inro
A gaming box

I could say so much more but this small introduction must be enough. A must see in Nagoya.
