Today was something I will never forget. These photos will not do Meteora justice. A three hour drive took us past a snow-capped Mount Olympus to Meteora in Central Greece. Home to 24 monasteries built on vertiginous precipices in the remote region of Meteora. In greek it means “between the earth and the sky”. Isolated for both protection and contemplation these places are both works of art and of human ingenuity. The landscape is indescribably beautiful with monasteries perched high above the valleys. Six monasteries are open and we visited two (Roussanou and Varlaam) but saw five from a glorious viewpoint. The frescoes and architecture are vibrant and cover the walls as do icons and treasures. The access was up dizzying steps and bridges slung across yawning chasms. In the medieval period people, animals and all necessaries were winched up 500 feet in nets.

A spectacular way to end my trip to Greece. Words and pictures are not enough the explain the feeling this wonderful place evoked in me.
