My sister and I went to see Hamnet the other day. I found it thoughtful, provocative, harrowing , uplifting and enthralling. I loved the slow narrative pace and the subtle and intricate foreshadowing throughout of events occurring later in the film. As a study in love, the complexity and effects of grief and a sort of healing it was really authentic. I felt it’s truth. As an exploration of relationships and motherhood and fatherhood it was unafraid.
Without a doubt it was an emotionally draining film … but the end was particularly painful and yet cathartic. I felt some kind of resolution: some acceptance of grief through reunion If you have experienced loss it will resonate deeply. All the cast were wonderful and it is an affecting film I will remember . Like “All of us Strangers” this is a special and immersive experience and epitomises the qualities of a great film well realised. Be prepared to sob quietly.
