Io arrivo a Venezia

Arrival from the station to this view

What an arrival in Venice … it was a little overwhelming. It’s a very beautiful place from my first impressions wandering around this afternoon. The canals, bridges, tiny maze of passages and courts. I’ll need Google maps! It has a decayed grandeur. The aesthetics of entropy. Crumbling plaster walls and damp. It has a certain romantic beauty.

The hostel will be quiet but not too far from the station and the city. Clean and no bunks… just single beds. La signora seems to have as much English as I have Italian. Few facilities but a kitkat and coffee were available when I arrived. I’m now sitting down to meal of bruschetta, pasta genovese and wine. I was hungry when I arrived.

Rialto bridge

Just a few random pictures from my first walk around … it’s a rabbit warren but always a new view around every corner. I’m sure I’ll get used to the crazy layout with a bridge every 20 yards. I think I’ll enjoy it here. I’ll explore St Marks tomorrow and maybe a trip to the islands.

So glad you arrived safely in wonderful Venice. If you have time the island called Burano would be worth a visit for lunch – Gatto Nero according to Angela Hartnett serves fantastic risotto- best she’s ever tasted and she should know! X
