Catching the bus to Lammassaari for a country walk

I decided to get out of the city for a little and enjoy some country air. Lammassaari is an island nature reserve a twenty minute bus ride from Helsinki city centre. So I put on my boots and my new Estonian socks and headed out.

It was easy to get to in the 71 bus and everyone was helpful when I needed it. The route from the bus stop was straightforward and well signposted. As usual Google maps was my friend. The reserve is a marshy island and was very peaceful on a dull day. Despite being so near the city it was a tranquil spot. Duck boards take you through the reed beds and into the woods. Here is where the city dwellers have their weekend cabins. I can see why they come. The wooden cabins are painted in many colours and are obviously a welcome retreat near the city.

The reserve is the home to a great many birds and in particular the reed beds are home to many species including reed buntings, bearded tits. I didn’t see any but heard a lot! By the water I saw Canada Geese, Barnacle geese and an osprey. There were also swifts and common terns. I’m writing this sitting in the bird hide at the water’s edge. Apparently this is one of the best places for birdwatching in Finland. A great place to contemplate nature and our place in the scheme of things.

While there were not many wild flowers I found quite a few.
