Die Blaue Reiter at Tate Modern

Franz Marc “Tiger”

Today I decided to indulge my passion for German Expressionist painting which I rekindled last month in Munich and Vienna. Since university I’ve always loved the energy and somewhat mystical nature of their work and Marc and Kandinsky have always been favourites. The exhibition was well put together and included many works by Kandinsky and his partner Gabriele Munter and the artists Jawlensky and his partner Marianne Werefkin. Together with Klee, Macke, Marc and others they formed the Blaue Reiter Group in the second decade of the Twentieth century. Interested in the spiritual and expressive nature of colour and influenced by Cubist work they were at the vanguard of art in the fertile artistic world centred on Munich. My favourite has always been Marc. His use of colour and the energy of his work is quite transcendental. The works on display are full of empathy with the natural world.and a wonderful use of colour and dynamic composition. The exhibition was worth it for his paintings alone.

Kandinsky

The inclusion of women was particularly significant as Munter and Werefkin were important in their contribution to the development and intellectual progress of the group.
