Where to begin? Kyoto on this autumn day was quite wonderful. The leaves are beginning to turn and the weather is perfect for this five hour walk. But first a catch up on yesterday evening. The Gion area where I’m based is in a conservation area and retains much of old Kyoto; narrow lanes with traditional wooden buildings with latticed fronts it is quite beautiful and recommended for an evening stroll. It’s real geisha land and I did see a couple of the real thing. A few photographs will give a flavour of the romantic atmosphere.

The Philosopher’s Path

This was a really wonderful walk. It takes you through five of the most beautiful temples, shrines and gardens. Eavesdropping on guide I learned quite a bit on the philosophy behind the designs and the symbolism of myth, emotion and nature. The mountains were beautiful and the gardens cool and refreshing. The temples and shrines I visited along the route were: Konchi-in, Nanzen-ji, Eikan-do, Honen-in and the gardens at Ginkaku-ji.

Half way I had a lunch of rice and eel which was delicious. It being Saturday many Japanese families eere out and many wear Kimonos … not sure if they’re real geishas. I think they dress up for photographs

As an aside I visited a beautiful small gallery exhibiting Edo period tea caddys; the lacquer work is incredible.
