A Last day in Kyoto

Today was yet another fine and sunny day. I’ve been lucky so far. I decided to visit another of Kyoto’s wonderful temples; Kizomizu-dera. Set high on a hill it was very crowded; both local worshippers and tourists. A little more commercialised outside than many temples but with some excellent shops selling better than average wares. The grounds and temple were truly gorgeous, as were the views over the city. There were queues of locals waiting to worship.

It was interesting to see many young Japanese couples out wearing traditional dress … a Sunday custom? on my way I walked past many shops selling kimonos? Not just for tourists.

After soaking in the atmosphere I visited the National Museum which had a sumptuous exhibition of 14th century art from a Buddhist sect. The silk scrolls and paintings were exquisite. There are so many museums in the city; art, traditional crafts, raku and many more. I spent a happy hour in the Kyoto ceramics centre which had some really stunning examples of the modern ceramicist’s art. I bought a tiny tea bowl which I hope I can get home safely.

Now I must book my train for the somewhat tortuous journey to my next stop … Takayama tomorrow.
