Augsburg

Fuggerei

I arrived in Augsburg after a slightly delayed train journey. Well I’m not entirely impressed. I had to book a cheap hotel as the only hostel is a proper youth hostel and I’m obviously not in that category. I have a single room and it’s clean but not very sociable. I’ve taken my usual evening wander. The city is not particularly attractive but I visited the Fuggerei, the world’s oldest social housing complex which was beautiful. Founded by the wealthy Fugger banking family in 1521 for poor residents of the city it is like a little town within the city. 150 houses and a chapel. We could do with today’s billionaires taking a leaf out of the Fugger playbook.

Tomorrow I think I’ll do a day trip to Regensburg which had been recommended by a German guy who lives there. It Prague the day after tomorrow. I think Augsburg won’t cut it.
