Seurat at the Courtauld

Seurat has always been a love of mine. Not because of his pointillism though his technique is wonderful but for his landscapes and his compositions of people in seeming isolation amidst crowds and the prism through which he views the disjointed qualities of modernity: La Grande Jatte, Bathers at Asnieres, Parade and many others. His crayon drawings are also enigmatic and superlative with incredible sensitivity

But this beautiful exhibition explored his tranquil views of the Normandy coast. Simple, placid and a far cry from his peopled landscapes and sreetscapes of the bainlieue. It was a privilege to see these works gathered together from many galleries. It was a rare opportunity to see these works close up and examine his technique. I loved the use of flat planes and the obvious influence of Japanese culture. There is a meditative quality at odds with much if his work. They are beautiful in their subtlety and stillness. The juxtaposition of preliminary studies along side finished paintings gave a real insight into his working practice. An exhibition I wont forget.
