This was an excellent exhibition which I can unequivocally recommend. Tracing his development from the 1850s to the years before his death. It explored his work in many media; oil, watercolour, pastel and etching and the developing influence of the Japanese aesthetic in his work. Beautiful use of colour, transparency and spaciousness as well as expressing his love of the effects of water, the river and effects of light. The delicacy of the views of Venice was exquisite and of course his sensitive and languorous portraits were well represented illustrating his interest in colour and tonality. The portrait of his mother was exhibited and its stark, sparse and open composition was startling.
