I was lucky enough to be in Paris for this outstanding and well curated exhibition. Exploring the artists seminal position in the crucible of modern art it took major themes which dominated Cezanne’s oeuvre; portraiture, bathers, still life, landscape among others.

Each well presented them was linked to modern artists and his influence on their works.

The influence of his landscapes, particularly Mont Sainte Victoire, was beautifully illustrated.

The artists chosen to illustrate his influence were many and varied.

This was a fascinating exploration both of the work of Cezanne himself and his enormous influence. To explore so many works gathered together with insight was truly inspiring.

The detail above with its flattened planes and shading is an great example of the prefiguaratiob of Braque and Picasso. In sum the exhibition with its well chosen examples exemplified the way in which Cezanne’s techniques of foreshortening, flattening and simplifying forms and use of blocks of colour carried on onto abstract art.
