Last Day in Berlin

East Wall Gallery
East Wall

Well today being a day for democracy in Serbia and Brazil I decided to celebrate freedom by walking to this beautiful fragment of the wall which was granted to artists in 1990 so they could express their feelings on the fall of the wall. A very inspirational walk with some wonderful art brightening the streets on an autumn day.

I’ve quite enjoyed Berlin. Of course it’s a city for the young who like partying until the small hours, dancing to techno. I sat with some great kids on the terrace last night. I love listening to them while keeping my own mouth shut! They’re brave and admirable in many ways but I wish they were a bit more politically engaged. But they’re good hearted and of course young. I felt included in their chat. It did make me feel my age though … their culture is so different particularly the Australians and USians. I get the Euro cultures in their diversity a little more.

On the whole I’ve enjoyed ny wanderings here. It’s a green city with some lovely streets but it’s not a city for the pedestrian and not easily walkable; i forgot how big it is.

The Spree

It’s been interesting and quite emotional finding out more about how the city was divided and the inhumanity of the wall separating families and friends for nearly thirty years. the Nemorial park and centre presented a vivid picture of the sudden descent of the wall among citizens. The doors from apartments to the east blocked and locked even before the wall cane into a full scale presence.
