Kraków

High Altar Krakow Cathedral

Today I set off to explore the Old Town of Krakow. With it’s enormous town square, Cathedral, churches, town fortifications and museums it’s a fascinating city. It’s a joy to wander through the streets. As the ancient capital of Poland it has a real depth of history and a diversity of architectural styles from the overwhelming high gothic and baroque of the Cathedral to medieval churches and then full blown Baroque, Victorian and Art Nouveau. There’s interest around every corner. Like Wroclaw it’s very green with many parks.

The Palace had two interesting exhibitions: one from a mid century woman Teresa Wallis Joniak bery reminiscent of Cezanne and Matisse.

The charming square in which the gallery is situated is bounded by art nouveau buildings.

Walking to the Wawel Castle (once home of the kings of Poland) I passed interesting corners of the city.

I didn’t go into the castle but its impressive situation on a hill top by a lake was suggestive of power.

After that I took my time with coffee and ended at the sumptuous cathedral. Quite extraordinarily beautiful. The Baroque interior replete with gold altarpieces, choir’s stalls and pulpit was not disappointing.

Once I’ve rested my legs I’ll venture out again. Krakow has charm but like Wroclaw has a lot of English tourists but some of the “lads” wandering about with cans do not impress. I think Krakow, like Prague has a bit of a reputation as a “party” town. Luckily my hostel with great bar, breakfast, ensuite and modern style doesn’t seem to cater for them. Tomorrow a more sombre day with a trip to Auschwitz.
